FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 30, 2022 Contact: Pablo DeJesus | info@uusj.org The Biden Administration Must End Remain In Mexico And Title 42 Washington, D.C.—On June 30th, Pablo DeJesús, Executive Director, Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice (UUSJ), called upon the Biden Administration to end the Remain in Mexico program, formally the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) and Title 42, while reaffirming the work of UUSJ and the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee to restore asylum. ### Today, June 30, 2022, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) handed down a judgment in the matter of Biden v. Texas, the court found in favor of the Biden administration and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas' memorandum of June 2021 on the matter. The memo constituted an effort to terminate the Trump-era “remain in Mexico” asylum policy. This comes as needed progress in the fight to end a pernicious, wrongheaded policy, and more generally to restore asylum. The ruling has cleared the way for the Biden Administration to act, even as much of the negotiation has shifted to other players, such as the courts and Congress. The Administration must do what is morally required as guided by both science, and humane policy. It is time to end the Remain in Mexico program and Title 42 now. As Unitarian Universalists, our faith teaches us to hold sacred the inherent worth and dignity of every human. We are compelled to support the safety and security of persons fleeing violence and repression. Remain in Mexico and Title 42 stand in opposition to this belief and commitment. We call on the Administration to restore fair access to asylum as swiftly as possible. The tragedy this week in Texas underscores the moral failings of our refugee and immigration policy as a nation. UUSJ will continue to challenge the anti-immigrant, anti-asylum agenda in Congress and beyond. Our faith demands nothing less. We call on members of our denomination to note the Unitarian Universalist letter to the Biden Administration and encourage Congress to do its part. Tell Senators, It’s Time To Reform Immigration Courts The immigration courts are politicized, and various administrations have repeatedly made policy decisions because they’re politically expedient rather than efficient or legally sound. The courts also lack adequate funding and staffing. These fundamental problems impair the U.S. immigration court system’s ability to deliver just and impartial decisions in a timely manner. The Real Courts, Rule of Law Act of 2022 (H.R. 6577) is the clear solution to fixing this deeply flawed system. | |
